Double Listing for Kidney Transplantation
Candidates for kidney transplantation may consider double listing as an option for increasing their odds of being matched with a suitable donor kidney. Transplant patients are typically placed on the national waiting list by their local transplant center, but the United Network for Organ Sharing permits patients to join the waiting list at other centers as well – a process sometimes called double listing. This option is particularly advantageous to candidates who live in heavily populated metropolitan areas that have a greater demand for organ transplants, where median kidney transplant waiting times can exceed 72 months. This is not to say that the process guarantees a transplant; patients simply stand a better chance of receiving a new kidney in a shorter time frame by being listed at an additional transplant center outside of their immediate area.
Tampa General Hospital’s Kidney Transplant Program welcomes patients from across the nation who are thinking about double listing. According to kidney transplant statistics from the Scientific Registry for Transplant Recipients, our program typically has a much shorter time to transplant than the national average. Additionally, we consistently perform a large number of kidney transplants every year. In order to be listed at TGH in addition to a local transplant center, patients will have to:
· Meet both transplant centers’ acceptance criteria
· Complete the formal evaluation process for each center; having a physician submit a completed referral form can begin the process at TGH
· Make preparations to travel to the transplant center offering an organ as soon as a suitable kidney is located, due to the time-sensitive nature of the procedure
· Plan to stay near the transplant center for several weeks following the surgery to undergo testing and follow-up visits to check for rejection
